Kawasaki disease (KD) is a multisystemic vasculitis of unknown cause that primarily affects children under the age of five (75-80%). KD occurs in every ethnicity and in all corners of the globe, although the highest incidence is reported in Asian countries, particularly Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. The major clinical characteristics of KD are a persistent high-grade fever, bilateral non-purulent conjunctivitis, diffuse mucosal inflammation, polymorphous skin rashes, indurative angioedema of the hands and feet, and non-suppurative cervical lymphadenopathy.

The most serious complications of KD are coronary artery lesions (CAL) such dilation and aneurysm formation that can lead to thrombosis and myocardial infarction. The development of CAL can have serious long-term consequences and may greatly impact the child's life and ability to stay active. As a result of cardiac sequelae, the affected child may also have to take anticoagulant drugs throughout the rest of their lifetime. In 2010, KD was unanimously elected and recognized as the most difficult pediatric disease to diagnose and manage by more than 500 pediatric specialists.

For KD, the goal of our team is to achieve a prognosis of zero mortality. This stems from our aim at comprehensive care with a solid clinical medical training team and improving therapeutic techniques. We have also implemented an attentive tracking service to remain up-to-date with the most recent research, including the genetics of KD. In the last three years, our team has become the global leader in the amount of published research on this disease, and has published the first book on Kawasaki disease to reach bookshelves.

Furthermore, we also offer a rare "without borders" worldwide network of medical services for KD. Our strong clinical healthcare service includes a lineup of eight sub-specialties to treat this systemic disease: neonatology, pediatric infectious disease, pediatric cardiology, gastroenterology, pediatric nephrology, pediatric rheumatology, pediatric pulmonology, and pediatric neurology, in addition to our Department of Nursing and Social Welfare Division, to jointly provide pediatric care for one of the most difficult childhood diseases. Therefore, in reaching the toughest pediatric disease – KD – we are the global leader in comprehensive care.
